Week 9 - How'd I do it?

I made the banner for Week 9 Digital Photography class using filters and a few other Photoshop tricks. Here's how I did it:

1. I began with the original image, a slightly over-saturated photo of a West Dover landscape from a few summers ago.

2. I then cropped it to make it more banner size (700x130 pixels)
3. I then went to Filter > Artistic > Cutout, which dropped out the grays and made the shapes look like..cutouts.
4. Next I played with color by going to the menu item: Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation. There I dragged the slider bar in Hue around until I got the color combo I liked:
5. This wasn't as bold as I wanted so I chose this same option again and pushed the Hue and the Saturation sliders to make color more intense:

6. Finally, I added the text using the text tool, a dark purple color, Stone San Sem font, and then altered the font with a layer style called "bevel and emboss" which gives it the two tone glow it had in the finished banner.
I look forward to your filtered photos this week too. Now it's your turn to share!

  1. Thank you Lisa for the example. I think it so cool what we can do with this software. I am amazed at all the features that the Elements 9 version has....and can only image what the full version of the CS4 or CS5 would be like. wow...!!!

  2. Well, Paula, a lot of the full version is stuff you'd never use unless you are a commercial artist. There's tons of print stuff, color correcting and aligning stuff, and gobs of tools for people who do photo-based art. Just look up Photoshop Tricks and it'll blow your mind what people are doing with this software.
